The Security Lens

John Halotek spent more than three decades working within government identification and security systems at international scale. In those environments, disciplined thinking around threat vectors, exposure, and system vulnerability is the baseline requirement, not a design consideration applied after the fact. That standard defines the architecture of Squares 9 Corporation at every level.

As Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Halotek approaches social media through the same analytical framework that defined his career: assess the threat environment first, engineer protection into the structure, then build the experience on top of that foundation. The principle is unchanged after three decades in the security field. What changed is the platform it is now being applied to.

Platforms that shape how individuals connect carry a specific structural responsibility. As artificial intelligence expands capability faster than public awareness of its consequences, Halotek holds that responsibility must be resolved at the system design level. It cannot be addressed through policy statements or applied retroactively to architectures built for different conditions.

How the Threat Landscape Shifted

Halotek watched the threat landscape shift in real time across three decades of operational security work. Early digital risks were bounded and relatively localized. The expansion of the internet changed the equation permanently. Digital crime scaled rapidly. Data became the primary target of exploitation. Personal information that had once been relatively contained moved into open, connected systems where aggregation, profiling, and exploitation became structurally easy.

By the mid-2010s, Halotek had begun tracking the accelerating development of artificial intelligence and its convergence with the data landscape that social media had created. Personal data, already widely exposed across open platforms, was now accessible to AI systems capable of interpreting, modeling, and acting on it at a scale no prior threat actor had been able to achieve. The convergence was analytically clear: the internet had redefined access to personal data, and artificial intelligence was redefining what could be done with it. Legacy social media platforms, engineered for engagement and continuous data flow, had no architectural response to that convergence. They were built before it existed.

The Decision to Found Squares 9

In August 2024, Halotek made the decision to step away from three decades of government-scale security work and found Squares 9 Corporation. The assessment that drove that decision was architectural: the social media industry had a structural gap that incremental changes to existing platforms could not close. The gap was in the foundation. Closing it required building from a different starting point.

Legacy platforms had been engineered for maximum connectivity and continuous data flow, with protection considered after the core architecture was established. That sequencing produced systems where exposure is a structural condition rather than a design failure. Halotek chose the opposite sequence: engineer protection into the structure first, from the initial architectural decisions, then build every other capability on top of that foundation.

The result is Squares 9. It is a security-first, closed-loop social media platform built around contained, member-controlled interaction. All access is defined and deliberate. Interaction takes place within private, invitation-only environments called Squares. Every message, image, and piece of shared content is protected through end-to-end encryption. Exposure reduction and trust boundary enforcement operate at the infrastructure level, continuously and by default. The system is designed so that protection is never a setting a member has to find or enable. Halotek does not draw a salary from the company.

Design Philosophy

Squares 9 was engineered with a single governing principle applied to every architectural decision: does this decision reduce member exposure, or increase it. The platform is a closed-loop system from the ground up. Access is defined by the member. Participation is intentional. Information shared within a Square remains within that Square and aligned with its original purpose.

Artificial intelligence within the platform is applied exclusively to system integrity and member protection. Strict architectural boundaries keep member data outside its scope entirely. The platform also includes a structured advertising model built to a defined standard: advertising is presented on the basis of clear, interest-based placement, without personal tracking, behavioral profiling, or the use of member data. The commercial model is designed to sustain the platform without compromising the architecture that makes it trustworthy.

Founder Statement

"As technology becomes more powerful, the systems we rely on must be designed to protect us. Squares 9 was built as a secure system first, with social interaction built on top of that foundation."

Approved Quotes for Media Use

The following quotes are approved for use in reporting, features, and editorial coverage.

  • “I did not set out to build another social platform. I set out to build a system that protects people as technology becomes more powerful.”
  • “AI brings extraordinary capability. Without strong structural guardrails, it also brings unprecedented risk.”
  • “We protect financial data with precision. We have accepted, as an industry, that personal data is something different. Squares 9 was built on the rejection of that premise.”
  • “The dominant platforms were engineered to maximize attention through exposure. Squares 9 was engineered to eliminate unnecessary exposure from the start.”
  • “Private social media is not a feature. It is a fundamentally different system.”
  • “The next era of social media will not be defined by reach. It will be defined by control.”
  • “Protection is not something you add later. It has to be built into the system from the beginning.”
  • “Trust is not restored through messaging. It is built through design.”

Key Interview Topics

John Halotek is available to speak with qualified media on the following subjects:

  • The convergence of artificial intelligence and social media, and what it means for individual privacy, data security, and personal safety
  • Why security-first design produces fundamentally different platforms than engagement-first design, and why that difference cannot be bridged through feature updates
  • The structural gap in existing social media infrastructure and why closing it requires building from a different architectural starting point
  • How closed-loop architecture reduces fraud, impersonation, harassment, and AI-driven exploitation at the structural level
  • Data ownership, digital rights, and the design requirements of a genuinely member-controlled platform
  • Responsible AI governance and what strong guardrails look like when they are built into the architecture rather than applied as policy
  • Platform accountability and the role of regulatory frameworks in establishing minimum security standards for social media infrastructure
  • Building an AI-native organization while maintaining human judgment and control over system architecture and direction
